I can check off one of the things I wanted to do before I die, as Dave and I took to the underbelly of the ocean (well, 40 feet below the surface). After a 20 minute briefing on all the horrible ways we could die and the ways to avoid blowing up my lungs (breathe... just breathe), we were both amazed as to how easy it was. The 30 minutes we spent under the water went by faster than anything I've ever experienced.
We were greeted at sea floor by a lone pufferfish, seemingly attracted by our mooring rope. A turtle took to the surface four stories above us, just before we swam over the top of a white mouthed spotted eel. As we turned from the eel, a huge turtle had snuck behind me and was coasting right at Dave, with an demeanor that hinted for Dave to remove himself from his sea bed. The standoff ended with Dave relenting his position (I think you could have taken him, Dave). I then spotted something big flash a white belly, and found a manta ray cruising over by our mooring station. I spooked him a touch, and he flew off like he had a jet pack on, just incredibly fast. Our instructor checked our air, and sadly made us go back to the surface, with the same pufferfish waving goodbye with his fin as we ascended.
And a new hobby is born, (like I need another).
